Best known to Christian music fans as a member of TobyMac’s Diverse City, Shonlock has been busy preparing to step out into a spotlight of his own. He spent much of 2010 on tour with TobyMac and Skillet for their record-breaking Awake Tonight Tour. And later this year, Shonlock will hit the road with Group 1 Crew. But what may appear to be an overnight success story has been a long time coming.

While touring with TobyMac, Shonlock demonstrated that he was more than just a dancer and choreographer. His ability to craft a song brought songwriting opportunities with touring partner TobyMac, as well as artists like Mandisa, Verbs and Kierra “Kiki” Sheard. His pop/rock/hip-hop stylings caught the attention of Arrow Records, resulting in a partnership that spawned the Where Never Begins EP in late 2010, followed by the new full-length album NEVERODDOREVEN.

“There’s a play on the title visually where it spells the same phrase forward or backwards,” says Shonlock. “The message is all about my relationship with God, and when you’re walking with Him, I never find it odd when amazing things happen. But on the flipside with the ultimate sacrifice of His son, I could never get even, which makes me forever indebted to Him.”

As parents we may or may not care who is famous but we definitely pay attention to the lyrical content. The opening songs, “Stronger” and “What If We Were Real” are very upbeat and catchy songs and Mandisa is a surefire GMA Dove Award nominee for female vocalist. I can’t get enough of the worshipful chorus of “Stronger,” “When the waves are taking you under, Hold on just a little bit longer, He knows that this is gonna make you stronger, stronger, The pain ain’t gonna last forever, And things can only get better.” “The Truth About Me” and “Say Goodbye” are both very vulnerable songs about accepting God’s grace and forgiveness in the face of self-doubt.

Perhaps the stand-out moment of this very solid album happens next with the ultra-catchy song, “Good Morning,” which features TobyMac. This is a surefire hit song in any music format. I don’t listen to much R&B-style music, as I’m more of a rock, contemporary and worship music listener, however the beats on this album are so engaging, this album is already in heavy rotation for me. “Good Morning” is so hook-filled and fun, I could literally daily listen to the fun chorus, “It’s a good morning, wake up to a brand new day…You give me the strength that’s just what I need, I can feel the hope that’s rising up in me.” The end of the song is just brilliant with Toby singing, “top of the morning to you, `disa” over the top of Mandisa’s hooky chorus. If you’re looking for a new faith-based work-out song, look no further than this gem.

“Waiting For Tomorrow” is another fun and worshipful song, with Mandisa belting out, “thank You Jesus…I can’t live my whole life wasting the grace that You’ve given, everyday’s a day to start over, why am I waiting for tomorrow?” “Temporary Fills” is another highlight with the dance rock beat, and the inspiring chorus, “No more temporary fills, I want a love that’s real, take everything I have and fill me up inside, I’m done looking for the quick fix, Jesus You are all I need.” That theme continues with the gorgeous closing song, “Lifeline.” The album ends like it starts with another personal declaration and prayer, “You are my lifeline, You are my rescue, The strength in my weakness, the light in my darkness, You are my safety, lifter of my head…You are my lifeline.”

Mandisa is a great role model for girls struggling with identity issues and has a great platform from her success on American Idol and GRAMMY and GMA Dove Award nominations. This album is loaded with positive grace-filled messages of hope from someone who has struggled with the pressures of life and understands that true happiness only comes from her relationship with God. Gospel singer Deitrick Haddon makes his feature film debut in the movie, ‘Blessed & Cursed,’ a motion picture written by the Stellar Award-winning artist. Described as a “gripping, Biblical account of Saul and David” that is “brought to life with a modern retelling of the classic story,” Haddon stars as Dwight Hawkins, a man struggling to overcome the backlash of his peers and seeking to find his life’s purpose.

“You know I’m a pastor now, so I’m doing more studying than I’ve ever done in my life. I was studying the story of Saul and David and the dynamics within their relationship. This movie just opened up to me,” Haddon told BV Buzz, about his inspiration for the film. ‘Blessed & Cursed’ also stars actors Sheryl Lee Ralph (‘Moesha’) and Drew Sidora (‘Step It Up’), as well as gospel singers Kierra Sheard, Karen Clark Sheard, Dr. Bobby Jones, J. Moss, Damita Haddon, Jorel Quinn of 21:03 and Rance Allen.

“I hope that people walk away with a sense of purpose, a sense of pride in the church,” expressed Haddon. “There are so many different scenarios and relationships in the film that touches people right where they are.”

Shot in the 36-year-old singer’s hometown of Detroit, the movie will be released on DVD on July 27th. Haddon already has a follow-up feature to ‘Blessed & Cursed’ in the works. Production on his second film ‘Gospel Street’ begins in June. “It’s going to be like what ‘Krush Groove’ was to hip hop,” he declared, before adding: “I already have like 10 films in the works.”
