Album: Declaring His Name All Around The World
Release Date: August 29th, 2011
Style: Praise & Worship/ Afro-Beats / Gospel
Label: Riversongz
Location: London, England

About:

As a singer and broadcaster Muyiwa’s deep rich voice has reached millions in Europe, Africa and the USA. In 2009 he was the first international artist to appear on the American BET channel at the annual ”Celebration of Gospel”. Earlier this year he presented the ”Turning Point” program to an estimated global audience of 70 million. Now with his fusion of soul, RnB and Afro-beat, featuring collaborations from Gospel favourites Darwin Hobbs and Mary Alessi as well as the multi-talented Riversongz and produced by the Grammy Award winning Kevin Bond, ”Declaring His Name all around the World” is a natural progression to his previous 4 CD/ DVD releases. The sheer power and poignancy of Muyiwa’s unique sound is simply too strong to stay a purely gospel secret. Yet, his music that brings so much joy is the product of early personal suffering.

Since his last album, which reached Number One on the HMV blues and soul chart and stayed there for five months, Muyiwa has successfully toured the UK for the second time and sold out Indigo 2 at O2, a feat never achieved by a UK gospel act previously, although it follows another personal success of a sold out Ocean in Hackney. He was also appointed Station director of Premier Gospel that has had a remarkably successful impact in uniting black churches nationwide.

Muyiwa and Riversongz travel extensively, which gave rise to the theme of the new album, having visited Canada, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, USA, Slovakia, Poland, Ireland, Ukraine and the Republic of Benin in the past 12 months. Drawing in different cultures and sounds bring together a joyful sensation of hands reaching out across the continents; whilst some songs have a very intimate feel such as “My Heritage” (Apata) a lullaby from his childhood. Speaking about the inspiration for the new album, Muyiwa replied: “We traveled so much and experienced so many people, cultures and sounds, it made perfect sense to explore some of these. This album is a journey of the World’s music as seen through our kaleidoscope.”

Reviews:

“For so long the secular music world has been running the show as far as “new sound” goes and Christian music has been coming in second place.. and i believe that as Christians we are supposed to be the ones making the new sound that compels all people to listen.. resulting in all people getting exposed to something that is new and fresh from God and i believe that when people listen to this album they are getting exposed to just that. This album is so anointed and so fresh, and it led me right into the Father’s arms with every beat. God, i ask that you would keep pouring out more anointed and fresh lyrics and sounds through Michael Ketterer.. so the people can experience you and your love.. in the name of Jesus.” - Andrew

Listen below:

“This is so fun and different. You’ll be dancing around your house before you know it having your mind blow by thoughtful lyrics and the soulful voice of MK. I’m partial to this guy because he’s a friend of mine. You couldn’t ask for a more amazing guy and all that comes out in his music. Go ahead and pull the trigger, buy this album and clear out the furniture in your living room. “ - Dave

“f there is any question in your mind as to whether this album is worth the measly 10 bucks, let me swiftly allay your every fear–it is worth it. This album is incredibly creative, intimately worshipful, and profoundly prophetic. With sounds ranging anywhere from pop to dance to hip hop to funk to stadium worship to i-don’t-even-know-what-to-call-it-because-i’ve-never-heard-it-before, Mr. Ketterer creates a genre entirely his own and carves a bold and daring path through the dense jungles of familiarity. If you feel your feet dragging along, stuck in the mires or boring and predictable music, go ahead and do yourself a gigantic favor and buy Love/War/Solar System. ” - Stencil

About:

“The idea dropped on me out of nowhere and, when something hits your spirit like that, you know it’s a gift from God,” says Haddon. “There are moments when God will give you stuff that is out of this world, and that’s what “Church On The Moon” means to me. There’s so much sadness and craziness going on down here on Earth, I want to take you somewhere else for a while. CHURCH ON THE MOON is Gospel music from another perspective – a record that takes you on a journey. When the last song has played, you will feel far above any problems that were weighing you down.”

Gospel singer Deitrick Haddon makes his feature film debut in the movie, ‘Blessed & Cursed,’ a motion picture written by the Stellar Award-winning artist. Described as a “gripping, Biblical account of Saul and David” that is “brought to life with a modern retelling of the classic story,” Haddon stars as Dwight Hawkins, a man struggling to overcome the backlash of his peers and seeking to find his life’s purpose.

“You know I’m a pastor now, so I’m doing more studying than I’ve ever done in my life. I was studying the story of Saul and David and the dynamics within their relationship. This movie just opened up to me,” Haddon told BV Buzz, about his inspiration for the film. ‘Blessed & Cursed’ also stars actors Sheryl Lee Ralph (‘Moesha’) and Drew Sidora (‘Step It Up’), as well as gospel singers Kierra Sheard, Karen Clark Sheard, Dr. Bobby Jones, J. Moss, Damita Haddon, Jorel Quinn of 21:03 and Rance Allen.

“I hope that people walk away with a sense of purpose, a sense of pride in the church,” expressed Haddon. “There are so many different scenarios and relationships in the film that touches people right where they are.”

Shot in the 36-year-old singer’s hometown of Detroit, the movie will be released on DVD on July 27th. Haddon already has a follow-up feature to ‘Blessed & Cursed’ in the works. Production on his second film ‘Gospel Street’ begins in June. “It’s going to be like what ‘Krush Groove’ was to hip hop,” he declared, before adding: “I already have like 10 films in the works.”

Embracing the idea that some of the most profound moments of worship emerge not from mountain-top experiences but from difficult, perhaps even catastrophic circumstance gives Ryan’s lyrics a poetic vulnerability reflecting honestly on the difficulties everyone faces.

Listen to the single below:

At the age of 18, his youth pastor surprised him by placing a guitar in his hands, stating, “I felt like the Lord was telling me to buy this for you” Ryan matured his musical gifts by playing at youth groups, summer camps and mission trips. While attending Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon, Ryan formed an acoustic duo with fellow Christian artist Paul Wright and played in local coffee houses. After adding a full band to the mix, they played throughout the northwest, packing venues and opening for renowned Christian artists. When Wright pursued his solo career, Ryan worked with him as a co-writer, singer, and guitarist on each of Wrights mainstream releases.

Ryan’s own music reflects the wealth of experience garnered from his time with these endeavors. In 2003, Stevenson moved to Boise, Idaho. He continued writing songs, leading worship, and performing in small venues, all while working as a front line paramedic. Wanting to honestly and vulnerably communicate through his recording and his live performance the grace and love that guides him through his own trials, Ryan Stevenson writes with a musical maturity beyond his years and a spiritual sensitivity that easily draws people into the musical message. Ryan is now being represented by 2:20 Entertainment Group/Streetlight Management (Group 1 Crew, Charmaine, Hyland, Living Anthem) and his new single “Yesterday, Today, Forever” is coming to iTunes from BEC Recordings on December 6th.

Artist: Liz Janes
Album: Say Goodbye
Release Date: December 7th, 2010
Style: Soul / Indie / Acoustic
Label: Asthmatic Kitty
Location: Lander, Wyoming

About:

Previous Asthmatic Kitty releases, the Sufjan Stevens produced Done Gone Fire (2002), her 2005 collab with LA free-jazz collective Create(!), and her second full-length Poison & Snakes (2004), saw Liz kickin’ down the avant Americana, the dirty psyche boogie, and the busted-up blues deconstruction. This time around she’s teamed up with Asthmatic Kitty artist and über producer Rafter Roberts to give us her own version of a soul record-as seen through the lens of a lady who cut her teeth in the fertile Olympia noise and improv scene.

Say Goodbye is a 11-piece collection of unpretentious life and philosophy paired with Rafter’s space-pop backing, Jason Crane’s (Rocket from Crypt) soaring Motownian horn arrangements, and Chris Schlarb’s smooth as chocolate gelato guitar work. Rafter and friends give new life to Liz’s beautiful, spacious voice and her attempts at making sense of the world. (In that respect this is a very goodhearted record, a universal gesture, a rope tossed in a storm. Liz is lookin’ out for you even while she plumbs the existential depths.)

As a lyrical statement, Say Goodbye wants to tell you that although life is brutal and people can be vicious it’s important to keep a part of you vulnerable and gentle, to be soft in the midst of meanness. Musically, we’ll all just geek out on how beautiful the arrangements are. Put simply, a satisfying two punch combo! So is Say Goodbye worth the five year wait? The result is a resounding yes! A yes with fireworks and pony rides and a free lemonade stand.

Artist: Aaron Neville
Album: I Know I’ve Been Changed
Release Date: November 9th, 2010
Style: Soul / R&BG / ospel

Label: Tell It Records / EMI Gospel
Location: New Orleans, LA

 About:

Aaron Neville teams up with super producer Joe Henry (Elvis Costello, Allen Touissaint, Rodney Crowell) to create one of the most heartfelt albums of his career. Thirteen all new recordings of timeless Gospel songs done in a new, raw, delta flavor that only Aaron can deliver.

Album available November 9, 2010… features the legendary Allen Toussaint on piano. Produced by Joe Henry.

In his opening notes on I Know I’ve Been Changed, the artist known to millions of devoted fans worldwide as Aaron Neville stands before the microphone not as a musical legend, but as an ordinary man appealing to an eternal God. His signature vibrato rises and dips in a musical prayer full of passion, utterly sincere.

It is perhaps the most powerful moment on a uniquely moving album his first gospel recording since Hurricane Katrina ripped through the city he cherished, destroying his personal home, and forever altering so much of the life he knew. Despite that tragic backdrop, the project plays not as a mournful reflection, but rather as a hopeful celebration of the three things that have shaped Aaron Neville most of all his hometown, his music and his faith.

In grand New Orleans style, I Know I’ve Been Changed celebrates Aaron Neville’s 50th year in recorded music. The album brings the artist’s career full circle, returning him to the music he loved first gospel music and reuniting him with Allen Toussaint, the legendary songwriter, musician and producer who produced Aaron’s first recording session in 1960.

Toussaint, who grew up in a nearby New Orleans neighborhood and attended the same school as the Neville brothers, has been a frequent collaborator with Aaron over the years. “Aaron gives the song, the arts, the fullness of his heart and soul every time,” Toussaint says. “He has always been that way. It’s good to know that when something is that good, it’s good forever the velvet voice of Aaron Neville.”

Producer Joe Henry and Neville recorded I Know I’ve Been Changed over a period of five days, using a stripped-down production approach to showcase the strength of the twelve handpicked songs, as well as the beauty of Neville’s unmistakable vocals.

In true old-school fashion, the musicians played along with Neville’s vocals in-studio to capture the feel of a live set. Arranging and recording such a large amount of material over such a short period, required masterful focus and teamwork. “When I go to the gym, I go to work out. When I go to church, I go to pray. When I go to the studio, I go to sing,” Neville explains.

To handle the challenge of that level of performance, the producer assembled some of the top players. “I call them hard hitters at the bat,” Neville says. “With them playing, there weren’t too many mistakes.”

After four days of working on the instrumentation and lead vocals, Neville pulled together a group of singers who had worked with him on tour and in-studio for many years. They followed Aaron’s vibe, creating classic background arrangements to match the era in which most of the songs were originally recorded.

“It was like a labor of love for everybody. They loved all the songs and they put their all into it,” Neville explains. “It was a fun album, working with those guys.”

Over the past five decades, the indelible spirit of New Orleans has been synonymous with the musical dynasty known as the Neville Brothers. For Aaron Neville the solo artist, there is an equally intimate connection between his music and the faith that has sustained him for his entire life.

“My Momma, Amelia Landry Neville, always taught the golden rule to us to treat others as we would like to be treated,” he shares. “One of her favorite sayings was this: ‘I’ll only pass this way once. Therefore any goodness or kindness I can show let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.’”

That perspective served him well in the months after Hurricane Katrina. “Right after the storm we’d go places to perform and run into displaced people from New Orleans everywhere,” Neville reflects. “So when we go sing we’re singing for them and letting them know they’re not by themselves. There’s hope.”

The spirit of New Orleans is marked by an undying hope. On this project Aaron Neville captures that spirit reflecting the hope of his hometown, drawing hope from his faith, spreading hope through his music.

About: DGC New Album Doing Their Thing Out Now!

The hand clapping, foot stomping Dublin Gospel Choir started 2010 with a real sense of purpose after the very successful release of their brand new album ‘DOING THEIR THING’ back in November. Packed full of true gospel classics and surprising future favourites, The Dublin Gospel Choir bring the album on tour all over Europe in 2010. They plan to tour in the UK from late Summer 2010 onwards.

‘DOING THEIR THING’ was produced by Ken Mc Hugh of Autamata fame. The first single to be taken from the album ‘Liberty Bell’ was also produced by Ken, a track he originally co-wrote with Carol Keogh of Autamata. The choir also had the award winning London Community Gospel Choir on hand to add some funky gospel flair and soulful arrangements to the tracks.

From their modest beginnings as a local school choir in Dublin’s inner city 13 years ago, they have become a household name in Ireland, playing a host of concerts each year, plus a large number of corporate and charity events. Add to that their annual slot at Ireland’s internationally-acclaimed boutique festival Electric Picnic (at which they played the Main Stage again in 2009) and a performance to a sell-out 82,000 crowd at Croke Park in 2008, and you have a group of people who are really going places. Not too many Irish acts, let alone international ones, can boast of sharing the stage with music industry heavyweights such as Rod Stewart, John Legend, Damien Rice, and The Chieftains. But that is exactly what the Dublin Gospel Choir has achieved over the last few years.

The choir also featured along with Chris de Burgh on a special New Year’s Day BBC Songs of Praise programme which was broadcast to over 35million viewers worldwide. Whereas the religious audience is one target market for them, the Dublin Gospel Choir seems to have broad appeal. Collaborations with people like Damien Rice and Paddy Casey have also won them a much younger audience and one that remains a large part of their audience at shows right across Ireland. They were also invited by Rod Stewart to join him for two great nights at the RDS. 2010 opened with the choir playing the televised Meteor Ireland Music Awards on Feb 19th and following some further Irish / Tenerife touring the choir are currently planning to undertake their first set of UK and European dates from Summer 2010.

“An annual must-see of Electric Picnic – who’d have thought gospel would be this cool?” (Irish Times)

“Gladdens the heart and brings a smile to the face……Uplifting stuff” (Hot Press)

“Ireland’s foremost gospel musicians” (Metro)
