One of the greatest gifts this Christmas season comes from the immensely talented vocal group, Wilson Phillips. With their latest release, “Christmas In Harmony”, the listener is treated to 13 arrangements of holiday songs both old & new all lavished with WP’s signature lush harmonies & produced by Glen Ballard, the same talent who perfected their sound in the early 90′s.

The CD opens with, “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday”. Although lyrically a bit inane, Wilson Phillips breathe new life into this relic from the early 70′s turning it into a fun, catchy pop tune.

They cover standards such as “Little Drummer Boy”, “The Christmas Song” & Silver Bells” making each one uniquely their own with their extraordinary vocal styling. And favorites such as “Sleigh Ride” & “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” possess an enjoyable girl-group vibe reminiscent of the 60′s.

The CD’s true highlights are the 3 new WP offerings. “Warm Lovin’ Christmastime”, written by Carnie’s husband, Rob Bonfiglio, is a wonderful, up tempo tune that shines as it celebrates being with the one you love at Christmas. Then there’s “Christmastime” created by Chynna & producer Glen Ballard. It’s a bright, effervescent number that evokes a feeling of pure bliss. “When I first heard that the Newsboys had released a “Christmas album” this year, I couldn’t snap it up fast enough. A Newsboys Christmas album? I couldn’t wait!

My first disappointment in the record before playing it is that it’s only an EP with just a handful of songs on it. My second disappointment was seeing the track list on the record before playing it to see that most of the selections were old, secular Christmas songs known to everyone nothing new. Then my biggest disappointment came when I played the record. This EP is the weakest, blandest, Christmas-music-ripoff that I’ve heard in a long time. The one star given for this review (a plus) goes to the last tune on the album The Christmas Song” which was actually released on an earlier album years ago and was apparently used on this ‘new’ album for filler.

Don’t get me wrong: I love the Newsboys and how they tremendously and effectively communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ through their unique sound. I have bought almost all Newsboys albums of the past. But this release tanks. I am very surprised that they allowed a release of this quality; therefore, I wonder if it was a ‘hurried-out’ project. If that’s the case, it shows. Even the packaging is cheap-looking. (I could have created it on my own computer.) No pictures, no thank-you to Christ, no nothing. As well, the name of the album is odd!

I played this record one time. I will not be playing it again. More than likely, I will be giving the album away very soon. Perhaps the Newsboys will release a proper, worshipful Christmas album in the future. I sincerely hope so!” - Saca

Today, a new Christmas song is available on iTunes.  The song is called “One Last Christmas” and it actually came from my time at the cabin.  Like all the songs on The Story of Your Life, this song has a story.  But the way the story came to me was a unique.  I received three different stories from three different people all in this small town in Illinois whose lives have been impacted by the life of a two year-old boy named Dax.  At just thirteen months old, little Dax was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. He was given two bone marrow transplants as a part of emergency treatment; one from each of his parents.  The doctors then told his parents that Dax would most likely not make it to see Christmas.

Well, this song is inspired by the true story of the love of a family, and the coming together of an entire community to make sure that this little boy could have one last Christmas.  His dad, determined that his son would see Christmas, put up the decorations early.  The neighborhood caught on, and did the same.  The whole town soon followed suit.  A website was built telling his story.  Soon, pictures were sent from all over the world of Christmas decorations that had been put up in his honor.  Incredible!

Dax did lose his battle with Leukemia, but not before he got to see one last Christmas.  Today, this little boy’s legacy lives on, and his parents are making sure it does.  They were so touched by the care they received from St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, that they now have a desire to raise enough money to run the entire hospital for one day in honor of their son, Dax.  The total cost to run St. Jude’s for one day is $1.6 million dollars.  Already, they have raised a quarter of a million dollars.

Right now, I have a song called “My Own Little World,” that’s been on the radio.  That song was written out of a desire to stop looking out for only me.  And this Christmas, it is on my heart to join forces with the Locke family, and help them in their cause.  I would like to encourage you to join us in raising money that will go to an amazing cause in St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital that cares for so many children each year.
