Artist: Take 6
Album: The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
Release Date: October 5th, 2010
Style: Acappella / Jazz / Vocal
Label: Heads Up / Concord Music Group Inc.
Location: Nashville TN, Los Angeles CA

About:

It might be the parties. Or maybe it’s the roasting of chestnuts. Or the caroling out in the snow. Whatever the reason, most people consider the holiday season to be the most wonderful time of the year. That’s certainly the case among the members of Take 6, the a cappella group that has been mixing elements of jazz, gospel, R&B and vintage doo-wop for nearly 25 years. Winners of 10 GRAMMY® Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Awards, the group has made an indelible musical and cultural mark in the past quarter century whatever the season.

Every member of this brilliant vocal team Claude McKnight III, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, David Thomas, Dr. Cedric Dent and Alvin Chea has held onto fond childhood memories of the holidays and made them a part of their adult lives. The timeless magic is very much a part of the their new holiday CD, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, a collection of seasonal favorites that are as heartwarming as a crackling fire and a festooned evergreen.

Take 6 is: Alvin Chea, Bass; Cedric Dent, Baritone; Joel Kibble, Tenor; David Thomas, Tenor; Mark Kibble, Tenor; Claude McKnight, Tenor

The primary objective in the making of the album was to create a sense of familiarity, says McKnight, who founded Take 6 in the ‘80s with some classmates from Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. “We wanted all the songs on this album to be the kind that people would hear and say, ‘Oh, yeah, I sing that at Christmas time,’” he says. “We each picked songs that we sing with our families every year at the holidays… We just wanted to make a record that would, for most people, just put out a really cool, all-around Christmas vibe.”

Mark Kibble, who arranged six of the album’s ten tracks, focused on keeping things simple, yet incorporating some of the harmonic spin that has become the Take 6 trademark. “The basic idea was to just let the Christmas melody ring through, and present it in a way that’s interesting but still familiar,” he says. “You shouldn’t have to bend your ear too hard to enjoy a Christmas song. It should take you right back to those early Christmases when you were a child.”

In the end, says Kibble, accessibility was the overriding objective in crafting these holiday tracks. “We wanted to record songs that were simple enough so that anybody listening could follow the melodies and sing along,” he says, “and yet still be ourselves and give a little bit of the harmonic backdrop that Take 6 is known for.”

This holiday season, when there’s much mistloeing and hearts are glowing when loved ones are near, sit back with Take 6 and enjoy The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Take 6 is: Alvin Chea, Bass; Cedric Dent, Baritone; Joel Kibble, Tenor; David Thomas, Tenor; Mark Kibble, Tenor; Claude McKnight, Tenor

Reviews & Opinions:

“I got extremely happy when I heard that Take 6 was coming out with a new Christmas album. On the other hand, I was a bit nervous because I wasn’t sure how this one would stand with the previous 2 Holiday albums (which were amazing). Well, now that I have heard the entire album I can honestly sat that I absolutely love it! The harmonies, for a group that have been around for 20 years, are just perfect! I cannot think of anything negative to say about these guys, their music or voices. I have yet to hear a group (acapella or not) on the same level as these guys. You will not be disappointed by this album. It can be played with family, friends, at parties, etc. Each song still has its classical sound with a spin to it.” - TexasGurl

“I’m a pretty big Take 6 fan, as I have all but I think 2 of their albums. So when I heard that they were dropping a project, I HAD to order…and they didn’t disappoint. For their 3rd project, it’s very much similar to some of the arrangements on “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” It’s full of many familiar Christmas songs that are all altered with their their signature acapella sound.

Take 6 is: Alvin Chea, Bass; Cedric Dent, Baritone; Joel Kibble, Tenor; David Thomas, Tenor; Mark Kibble, Tenor; Claude McKnight, Tenor

I wouldn’t say that they stretch that much on this project, but that doesn’t mean that the songs lack that stylistic complexity that we always see from the group. The bass exchanges on “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” are simply amazing, and it almost displays the amazing personality that they bring to their live performances. Shelea Frazier joins the group (same singer on their last album who was featured on the song “Someone To Watch Over Me”) and she provides a great contrast to the warmness of the group. Even “The Sugarplum Dance” is fun to listen to. And they had some cool ideas for “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells”

If you’re a Take 6 fan…or just like hearing some amazing vocal arrangements, I’d say that this is a must have. If you’re not hip to Take 6, I’d still say try it out…especially if you like Glee. (Hate I had to reference that, by the way!) Glad they’re still rolling well and making great music. They’re truly jazz (and good music) ambassadors. ” - Brian

“This is a very good album! Every song on it is very well done! And, the harmonies, they are just out of this world! “Christmas Time Is Here” is my favorite song on the album, it is so beautiful, but, again, all the songs are very good. I’ll tell you what, if you’re trying to decide on whether or not you should buy the album, stop thinking about it, go ahead and buy it! You will be so glad you did, trust me:) ” - J.T.

Artist: John Elefante and Mastedon
Album: Revolution Of Mind
Release Date: November 10, 2009
Style: Rock / Christian / Progressive
Label: Kingheir Music
Location: Nashville, TN

About:

“John Elefante’s name came to prominence in 1981 when he became the new lead singer and keyboardist for Kansas. John sang the lead vocals and performed keyboards on three multi – Platinum albums with band, giving also a major songwriting contribution. In 1984, together with his brother Dino, he started to become involved for the first time in producing the christian act Sweet Comfort Band. Soon the couple became one of the most renowned producers in the genre, in particular their tenure with Petra brought multiple gold and platinum albums, 10 consecutive CCM Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Hard Rock Cafe, and the only artist to ever have 4 albums in the SoundScan top-100 Christian chart.

Elefante also felt the songwriting muse and formed a hard melodic band with his brother, MASTEDON. The band’s name was a pachyderm-inspired reference to the brothers’ last name. Although John was an accomplished vocalist and performer, the MASTEDON albums featured multiple lead singers and performances by other artists, creating an eclectic sound anchored by John’s songwriting. His brother Dino played a prominent role, contributing songwriting and handling most of the guitar work. Mastedon’s first release was titled “It’s a Jungle Out There!” (1989).A year later, the band released “Lofcaudio”. The albums charted at #25 and #10, respectively in the Billboard Top Contemporary Christian chart. To this day, they are still considered classics in the genre. In 1996 John started a solo career that brought him to release three successful albums more in the Adult Contemporary – Pop Rock vein. After a few years of hiatus, John Elefante decided to go back to his roots sound with a brand new album that – contrary to the predecessors – would only feature his amazing lead vocals. Musically, the new album, harkens back to the best of Mastedon, his solo albums and his work with Kansas and none other than main Kansas songwriter Kerry Livgren appears on lead guitar on the release. More famed musicians and such as Dave Amato (REO Speedwagon), Anthony Sallee (Whiteheart), Dan Needham (Michael McDonald, Neville Brothers, Amy Grant, Garth Brooks etc) and of course John’s brother Dino Elefante. Rich melodic harmonies and melodies are the keys of John’s new album, released in Asia/Europe as “MASTEDON 3″

Newsboys – Go (2006)

Posted by Ruil On October - 30 - 20101 COMMENT

Artist: Newsboys
Album: Go
Release Date: October 31, 2006
Style: Christian rock/Pop rock
Label: Inpop
Location: Mooloolaba, AU (Texas, US)

About:

The Newsboys are a Christian pop/rock band formed in 1987 in Mooloolaba, Australia (although they soon relocated to Nashville, Tennessee). Its core members, John James and Peter Furler, originally hailed from Australia where they played in a band together called The News.

Newsboys are considered one of the most popular bands in the Christian music industry. They have had numerous hit singles on the Christian pop charts, including Shine (1994), Take Me To Your Leader (1996) and He Reigns (2003).

In 2000, they helped start and headlined the annual, travelling CCM festival Festival Con Dios with Audio Adrenaline and The O.C. Supertones. It was known for featuring popular Christian bands and its motorcross stunts.

Steve Taylor has produced many of their hit albums, and several of the songs he has worked on with the band (such as Breakfast, Take Me To Your Leader) feature Taylor’s humor and quaint lyrics.

During the Step Up To The Microphone tour, the band featured the drums on a rotating platform that could tilt downward up to 90 degrees. In fact, there were two sets of drums and Peter Furler (the original drummer) and Duncan Phillips would wear seat belts, so they wouldn’t fall out, and have a rotating drum-off. This feature is still used on their tours and has grown to be quite popular.

In 2003, Jody Davis left the band to care for his sick daughter, Bethany. His replacement, bryan olesen, left in 2006 to work on his own band, Casting Pearls. The band announced in January 2007 that Paul Colman would be replacing Bryan.

The Newsboys released their new album, Go, on October 31st, featuring songs such as their hit single I Am Free, along with new singles Wherever We Go, and Something Beautiful. In March 2007, a collection of remixes from the Go was released as Go Remixed.

On December 31st 2006, bass player Phil Joel departed from the band to devote more time to family and personal goals.

In January 2009, the band announced that guitarist Jody Davis would return, replacing Paul Colman. Colman continues to pursue his solo career.

In March, 2009, it was announced that Peter Furler will be leaving the band to pursue other interests and will be replaced by Michael Tait, former member of dc Talk and founding member of Tait. However, it was also announced that Furler will remain with the Newsboys in a production/advisory role, and may occasionally return to the stage with them for special events and will still be on the albums.

In March, 2009 it was annouced Micheal Tait would be the new lead singer.
