In 1999, the Southern Gospel Music world was changed forever when George Younce and Glen Payne announced that Cathedral Quartet would retire. In December that year, a 30 year era in gospel music came to and end.
It was at that time that Roger Bennett and Scott Fowler decided to take the Cathedral legacy forward by forming a new quartet. Legacy Five took the stage in January of 2000 and their music ministry has been going strong ever since.
Scott commented about the early years, “We had no idea how Legacy Five would be received by the people, but we really believed that God would bless our efforts… and He certainly has!”
In their first year, the group recorded their debute project titled “Strong in the Strength” which garnered a Favorite Album of the Year nomination. The group’s first single release from that album titled “I Stand Redeemed” was also nominated for Song of the Year and reached number two on the radio charts.
In 2003, Legacy Five headed overseas to record an album with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The recording “London” was nominated for Favorite Album of the Year and it produced their first number one radio single titled “I Found Grace.”
In 2004, Legacy Five all but swept the Singing News Fan Awards winning the Favorite Group, as well as Favorite Pianist, Favorite Baritone and Favorite Bass. They also launched their highly successful Celebration events, bringing together gospel music’s finest artists and hundreds of Legacy Five fans to the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN, for three days of fun, fellowship and spiritual rejuvenation. These three day events are still going strong over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
In March of 2007, Co-Founder Roger Bennett died after a 9 year battle with Leukemia. Roger endured 3 bone marrow transplants and countless chemotherapy treatments. But his “legacy” lives on thru the music he wrote and the group he started.
Legacy Five’s first decade has been marked with countless Singing News Fan Awards as well as several Dove Award nominations, but Scott Fowler says, “the most rewarding accolades are the ones we get in the form of letters from the people we sing to. People telling us how a song we sang ministered to them or encouraged them. The personal testimonies of God’s goodness in folk’s lives and knowing that our efforts are making an eternal difference, is why we do what we do.”
